A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
