Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in 882 Days

Nineteen of the Russian's 21 titles have been earned on hardcourt

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden title for over two years with victory over opponent Moutet in the tournament final.

The athlete, a former number one, has endured a torrid period, winning just one win at the Grand Slams and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his service game in specific - caused him dropping out of the top ten and eventually separating with long-time trainer Gilles Cervara.

Presently working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has steadily improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought three-set win over opponent Corentin Moutet.

This represents the player's initial championship since the Rome competition and initial on a hard court from March of that year.

The win also means Medvedev has won 21 victories at 21 distinct events.

"For the first time I'm at a competition with my both daughters together, so to get a championship is particularly special," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in dedication of my younger daughter her name, because the initial championship I achieved when my first daughter her name was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six championship matches, including in that event previously this season.

Medvedev's retrieving approach and recurring outbursts on court had prompted some to wonder if his ability to play at the top level was finished.

However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an improved serving game.

Medvedev came back from a break down in the initial set against the difficult opponent, winning four of the final five points to gain the advantage.

The competitors swapped breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden tour title, took control to force a final set.

Moutet defended 4 initial opportunities in a close final set before the champion secured a break to that score to close out the victory.

Suitably, Medvedev clinched the title with a rally at the net, with Moutet failing to handle a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
