From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.

“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.

Some Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Release

But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.

Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.

“It’s quite rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Releases Response

Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.

Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.

Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
