New Year Revelers Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK
Weather experts have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead Despite Forecasts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are set to take place, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," stated the weather service.
Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are expected to be cold, meaning extra layers vital, as per forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.
- Travel is expected to be disrupted.
- People have been urged to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network.
Temperatures Forecast to Drop Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Alerts Released
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this meant the weather could to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
