The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Has the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
