The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
People have gathered across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state memorials until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the discussions said that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the morning session concluded without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to close the disparities between the two sides.
Essential Matters in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict governance of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere seems like home now and until all the hostages return none of us will be secure."
"After we see all home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Protester a participant explained: "We need do any agreement required for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of Israelis want the conflict to finish in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the dusk arrives, the fear comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area said two more dead people had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south region, medics said.
